Chalk Rock Ride: May 26 & 27, 2018
The Redwood Empire Endurance Riders (REER) invite you to experience the 2018 Chalk Rock Endurance Ride.
Since 1975, the Barnwell Family has graciously helped Redwood Empire Endurance Riders host our Chalk Rock Endurance Ride. Established in 1884, their ranch is a model for timber harvest practices recognized by state and federal agencies. It is also a working cattle ranch. Riders love the stunning panoramic views as they ride through meadows and around the beautiful Chalk Mountain itself.
RIDER LIMIT: This ride is limited to 70 riders, combined for all distances. Entry requests will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Historically, the ride has filled to its limit. Please plan accordingly and submit your ride application early.
THE TRAIL: Now a two-day ride, Chalk Rock will have an LD and a 50-miler on both days. Trails have been re-opened to use the well-loved 2013/2014 course. Trails are primarily on both maintained and older/unmaintained logging roads. Depending on the recent weather, this lends itself to having both harder and softer footing throughout the ride. Like all REER rides, there are elevation changes. The weather is usually cool and humid in the mornings, with the possibility of warm and sunny afternoons. Hoof protection is required. This is a ride, not a race.
RIDE CAMP: Ride camp is a bi-level grassy meadow bordered with redwood trees and a creek. Horse water will be troughed from the creek. Please bring your own drinking water.
DIRECTIONS: From Highway 101, take the Highway 36 exit just south of Fortuna. Continue east on 36 for about 30 miles to the bridge at Bridgeville. Turn right at the end of the bridge; you’ll be heading for Blocksburg. Follow signs about 2 miles until you see a marked pipe and wire gate on the right side of the road. Turn right into camp. Make sure you’re watching for ribbons and signage.
From I-5, take Highway 36 from Red Bluff to Bridgeville and turn left at the bridge; then follow the above directions. If you’re unfamiliar with Highway 36, turn up your trailer brakes before heading down McClellan Mountain into Bridgeville and USE LOW GEAR.
RIDE RULES: The Chalk Rock Endurance Ride will comply with all AERC, REER & State of California Rules and Regulations. All equines must have some type of hoof protection to enter the rides. Dogs are welcome in camp, but must leashed at all times.
VETS: Dr. Jen Powers and Dr. Susan McCartney. Please plan on picking up your registration packet and vetting your horse in on Friday afternoon before the potluck and ride meeting.
FOOD: Potluck Friday night. For those that’d like to join, please bring a casserole, salad, dessert plate, or similar addition to share. Saturday night dinner is included in each rider’s entry. Extra dinner tickets are available to purchase on the entry form. All volunteers eat free!
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS: Friday Afternoon: Pick up your vet card from registration. Then bring both your card and horse to the veterinarian to vet-in for Saturday’s ride. There will be a Friday evening potluck to be followed with the ride meeting for Saturday’s ride. Bring your maps to study the trail. After the ride meeting there will be opportunity to ask any questions you may have, as well as a volunteer meeting for any non-riders willing to lend a hand on ride day. Saturday night: A catered dinner will be followed by an awards banquet and review of Sunday’s trail. Bring your dinner ticket unless you are a volunteer; all volunteers eat free. For those riding on Sunday only, you will need to receive your vet card and have your horse vetted-in on Saturday afternoon sometime. Please have patience as the vets may be busy with judging and vetting Saturday’s riders, and fit in where you can. If you’re riding two days on the same horse, your Day 1 completion vet check will also serve as your Day 2 vet-in, so bring your Day 2 card with you at your post-ride completion exam.
ENTRY FORM NOTES: Download adult and junior rider entry forms here or at the foot of this page. Limited Distance and 50-miler riders must show proof of current AERC membership or pay a $15 non-member fee. Checks are cashed after the ride.
CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY: Full refund prior to 14 days before the ride. $30 fee withheld for cancellation within 14 days of the ride date. Cancellations (including no-shows) after the Tuesday before the ride receive no refund. Full refund less $30 for entrants whose horse did not pass the pre-ride veterinarian examination by the attending ride veterinarian/s. Cancellation notice must be received by Ride Secretary, Donna Biteman, either in-person, by email at DMajicc@yahoo.com or by phone at (707) 498-3221. This policy is non-negotiable.
